This phrase immediately struck me when I heard our facilitator use it. It was a new metaphor for me but one I quickly resonated with as I reflected on many of my experiences over recent months. He was talking about chaplains but it works well for clergy and theological educators too. Sometimes it happens because we are safe people to take all the excess energy at other times it is because we are representatives of God or the institution. Christmas can be one of those times when emotional lightning rods are much in demand because of all the pressures and cultural baggage that comes with Christmas. I pray for peace but know there may be a storm or two.
