I am much too old for an annual pilgrimage to see Father Christmas, instead we try to go and see the Cotehele Christmas garland. Unlike our decorations the same old same old don’t come out each year, every garland is a unique creation reflecting flowers grown and dried over the previous year. It is so beautiful but it is a fleeting beauty – around for a month only, all that work and the thought that flashes through my mind is it worth it, a thought that is much too functional and too little appreciative of beauty that inspires and nurtures. I love the reminder of the warm sunny days the garden evokes in a room with lit candles and a roaring fire, it reminds me that seasons change and I am never stuck somewhere forever even though it may feel like it sometimes. The garland goes to compost so it nurtures future garlands, I like that image too and hope that some of what I have been and done in 2014 will nurture growth in 2015.
