Yesterday I was interviewing new students for the MCYM degree in Theology, Mission and Ministry with Durham University. One of the amazing aspects of my job is seeing treasure emerge in the lives of our students and they grow and develop into all God created them to be. My prayer for today was that God would give me a glimpse of that treasure and I could begin to see what might emerge over the three years of the course. Treasure is often found in unlikely places and in ways we might never expect.
I was reminded of the phrase treasure in earthen vessels from a dwelling in the word exercise we had done at the forum on theological education at St John’s on Monday. It is from 2 Corinthians 4 but was worded clay jars in the version we heard but somehow earthen vessels lingers on from some long ago encounter with a different translation. The Bible has many evocative images in it, this is one of my favourites.
