Yesterday I joined the congregation at St Paul’s Cathedral for the consecration and ordination of three Bishops. I was there to support Anne Hollinghurst as she became Bishop of Aston, the place where Paul was a Curate. I don’t know Anne but wanted to stand in solidarity with others who were welcoming the first female to be ordained as Bishop in the Diocese of Birmingham. It was a day to celebrate. It was also a day to meet other clergy and spend time connecting over coffee and lunch – something I need to spend more time doing I think as it is encouraging to hear the stories and experiences of others.
Yesterday was Michaelmas, the feast of Michael and all angels and in the sermon we heard the new Bishops being entreated to be angels, God’s messengers. But that is not a task only for those called to such an office, it is something all of us can be and do and wonder what message it is we carry with us and perhaps be more purposeful in our message.
