I had one of those special moments on Sunday at church, seeing people come forward to complete the stickers in the picture, identifying their gifts and passions. I think for many of us it is easier to talk about what we are passionate about than what gifts we have! We did this as part of an introduction to our spiritual companions programme which is about life balance, using our gifts, making a difference in the world. It has seven areas: Connecting, Doing, Peacemaking, Giving and Receiving, Learning, Praying, Resting and Playing. Those who choose to meet with a spiritual companion and set goals in these different areas. Those of us who are spiritual companions to others also have someone who is that with us. Most of us need encouragement and support in working out how we are going to live our Christian life, that’s what we are hoping happens with the spiritual companions programme. Over the next few weeks we will be looking at the different areas with different congregation members sharing their perspective on the discipline.
This is an often cited quotation but I find it powerful each time I read it:
“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”
Teresa of Avila
